Okay, I'm starting again.  I haven't run in a while and I can feel every extra pound.  It was slow and hard today, but you got to start somewhere, I know it won't take me too long to feel better when I go out.  And on the bright side I have put in my notice at work so "NO MORE GRAVES"  I know some people can do that and run and be just fine, but not me because I never get to sleep more than 3/4 hours when I am done because of my kids.

Here is my biggest loser starting: 202lbs and watch them start to go away.

Way to commit! I am looking forward to watching your numbers go down! We will do all we can to help encourage you along! Great job on the miles today! I'll be watching for more blogging from you!

I know it's not a lot but I never run after a grave, but I had to work again tonight so my logic was get up and run a little and hopefully wake up out of my sleep deprived stupor.  I did one mile and at a good pace for me 11:30, I was working hard but not overdoing it.  I think it worked I am doing okay!

It was interrupted though to stop sword fights and such.

Ha! I love it, "It was interrupted though to stop sword fights and such" I can totally relate...although not so much sword fights, just a lot of pushing and crying and stealing toys. Way to get something in no matter what! I am interested to watch your progress.

From Kim on Tue, Apr 08, 2008 at 10:35:21

Good job! Just keep plugging away! We are here to support you. Unfortunately we can't help you out on the sleep and the sword fights!

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Apr 08, 2008 at 10:53:50

One is better than zero, and it adds up. You can run very well off only one mile a day but done six days a week. Of course, more would be better, but this regimen takes you a long way. My son has run as fast as 25:34 5 K in the Salt Lake Classic at the age of 6 off that type of training, and he was holding his pace on the last mile, and in fact, passing other runners.

Total Distance

First I don't normally sleep that much but all I got the day before was a 1hr nap and a 2hr nap after working my 12hr grave. Needless to say I was too tired to move, so no exercise. But today I did better! I tried to leave my husband with 5 kids (3 extras from the neighbors)to go and do my run. I knew he would let me if I was going for a run. I averaged just over 13min/mile not too bad for starting but had to take a break at 1 mile to stretch my shins, they were getting tight. Since I ran outside I had no sword fights and no toys being chucked under my feet on the treadmill(apparently that's really fun to watch as stuff comes flying off the back) Just ask my two year old. Plus I couldn't help but sing out loud to P!nk, u and ur hand. "I'm not hear for your entertainment, you don't really want to mess with me tonight!"

Good luck with your running - keep it up. Your goal is the Portland Marathon - Oregon?

From Laurie on Mon, Apr 21, 2008 at 14:51:53

Right now I got to be able to finish the ogden half marathon, and I want to throw in a couple of halves in during the year, but as for marathoning, I burned out last year from the grand slam, and the goofy challenge, so I am limiting it to Portland, I need to visit my sister and see her new house she is dying to show off!

Good luck with your running, and congrats to your 11 yr old, it's so much fun to watch them when they are young. I wish I had that but my kids like to run and my daughter did her first 5k at 3.5 yrs old!

Going for consistency today.  We are going to be in the car quite a bit today so I knew if I was going to do anything I had to get up and do it.  Did you know I haven't been up before 8am in who knows how long?  I did one mile, first half was a 12m place while I kept bumping up for the second and finished in 11:29.  Woohoo.  Now I just need to get down to a consistent 10 min pace, it will come in time and with the weight loss.

Did my first spin class for an hour.  Did you know that they don't have airconditioning in gyms in small town California.  We had fans but no a/c it was probably upper 80's in there.  Yuck, I'm not used to that yet since it's still so cold in Utah.  We had a great time and it was taught by my sister in law.   Kicked my butt, literaly, my bum was so sore from the seat.

We ran along Hwy 88 in Pine Grove, CA today.  Big downhill to start slight up hill, then slight down to the turnaround, we came back up and then went up Mt. Zion's.  Oh my, talk about Emigration, but without the turns, I walked up it, Chris ran but it still hurt.  My calves were killing me from spin, I felt better if I stayed on my toes.  And we had a nice sprint up the last hill to my parents house.  good job, now I just got to stay out of those fudge/marshmellow creme covered mint brownies.

Okay,  I've been slacking, but I am starting again.  I have run out of excuses.  Saturday was technically my last day but I ended up going in last night just to help out the new guy.  So for now and forever more I am done with graves.  That was so hard, I would eat all night long and then be in the mind set that I still got to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  I know it wasn't helping anything and I know that getting regular sleep will help also.

I kicked off my start with an exercise video. (Jillian Michaels from biggest loser of course) yuck, it wasn't easy.  But I am starting.  My goal is 30 days straight of video mixed with running.  I need to lose at least 10lbs before ogden half marathon.

My weigh in days will be Saturday.

Chris got up extra early this morning so he could be back from biking in time for me to run some before the kids got up.  Isn't that sweet? Isn't that irritating?  I am not a morning person but I really really needed it.

I got 2.5 miles in before he had to go to work.  I am doing okay and even averaged a 12:30 today.  I am nowhere ready for ogden half but I think that I'll be able to get myself somewhere close to ready for the distance before it comes.  I just won't be doing any pr's but  at least I won't kill myself.

Did the Jillian workout again, this time I did not eat 2 hrs before hand and hence was able to avoid the digestive pyrotechnics that I so enjoyed last time I attempted it.  Tomorrow I will run, or jog because that what I do, but I'm working on that whole speed thing.

I averaged about a 13:20 for the whole thing and that includes a quarter mile warm up/down, at a 17min pace.  The fourth mile was most definitely the hardest.  We ran from our house down through lake park in west valley.  It goes past verizon, and discover, and has some good rolling hills.  Mile 4 has the longest uphills and I sprinted up three during that mile reaching speed of 9:40 mpm pace by the time I hit the top.

Chris had the day off and we biked together as a family.  He was hauling the kids in the trailer and it just about evened us out!  Yes, I'm more competition on my bike I guess then on my feet.

We hit speeds of over 18mph, and hit 7-11 for slurpees at mile 9(mine was crystal light).  It was actually a lot of fun and I don't ever remember enjoying a bike ride like that.

I went through Lake Park again today, this is the course for the Westfest 5k.  I averaged a 12:30 pace but I would really like to learn to keep a steady pace.  This was a lot of up and down speed.  Would walk for a minute, then start to pick it up, then I'd look at my watch and it would say something like 10:20, YIKES! So I would try to slow down, then it would happen again.  So I end up walking more than I would like and running too fast to maintain.

I'm also having a problem with my feet going numb.  It doesn't take much walking for it to go away but they are consistently going numb, almost my whole foot, and I don't like it? Any suggestions?  I'm thinking about my weight gain last year that maybe my shoes are too small now?

One time in 1994 my whole leg went numb during a tempo run and I had to stop. Once I stopped it went away. It has not happened since.

Hey, thanks for welcoming me to the blog. I run Lake Park (where I work) every Tuesday with work buddies.

I'm closing in on the 34 minute time for a 3 mile course.

I think I've met you and Chris, probably at a Christmas party when I was hanging out with Christina.

Good luck with training. I get numb feet too, which can be caused by a number of things; nerve inflammation anywhere in the back and legs, diabetes, poor circulation, wrong shoes. Sorry for sounding like a doctor. Hopefully it's nothing serious and as in my case, isn't aggravated by exercise.

WestFest 5K on June 28, eh? You and Chris going to run that this year?

From Laurie on Fri, May 02, 2008 at 16:07:22

We like to do it that one, home course and all. Chris is nursing patellar tendonitis right now and is looking to do some platelet infused injection, basically putting his own blood into the tendon to speed healing. We meet with the doctor next week. It's a bit pricey and of course insurance won't cover it, but running is therapy so we'll do it if the doctor says is will greatly decrease his healing time.

I got some new shoes yesterday and did two miles on the treadmill with them.  I think my shoes were too small.  I knew they weren't the greatest but I was just trying to make them do.  My shoes disappeared after st. george last year and I was hoping they would reappear.

I got in two miles, mile one at12min, mile 2 in 11:35.  After that I did 25 min of circuit training with Jillian.  And the sweat keeps pouring................16 days until Ogden half!

HOORAY!

I just did my longest run since January of this year. Since I missed my run on Saturday I got up way earlier than I ever willing do and even without biting off my husbands head for waking me up I got up and hunted down all my gear and hit the treadmill. (I didn't want to carry water and I wanted to keep it a controlled pace.) So I pulled in my radio and listened to the Chunga show on 101.9 the end. I don't think one song was played the entire time but I did laugh a few times.

I did eight miles with a little bit of a cool down afterwards in 1:04:45. Which gives me a 13:05 average. Score baby! I am so happy, now I have to go clean my house before the sheet rock people come.

Oh Happy day...........oh happy day...............

I convinced myself to go back to bed this morning,

I'm too tired, I've been going to bed to late, I ate too much yesterday, the bed will be sad if I get out of it etc.  Basically anything and everything to go back to sleep but finally this new runner person in my head said get up and do it.  You ALWAYS feel better afterwards, it never makes you any more tired during the day, blah blah blah blah blah.

So I did it,  3 quick miles

mile one 12:15

mile two 11:45

 mile three 10:40

Oh, and if anybody is reading my blog, If you want to run the race for the cure, Larry H miller will pay for half your registration, so it costs 12.50.  Just type in WASATCHFORD in the coupon code when you register on active.

Sometimes we think it is going to be more enjoyable to lay there, but like you said, that runner dudette in our head just sits there and bugs us till we get up and get running! That is cool that Larry Miller is doing that! I wish we could join in on this one, but it won't work out for us this time.

Wow what a race! First off, we thought we would fight traffic and ride
trax. Well three trains go by and we cant get on! We finally smooshed in up by the driver and the wheelchairs. Some sweet grandma help Loren in her lap so that I wouldn't fall over. Natalie got to watch over the drivers shoulder and see where we were going.

There was so many people there it was great. I was able to find Hildivinsi from the running blog and we ran together since we are about the same pace. It took us about 5-6 minutes to pass the start line and then it was just crowds of people. I actually felt so fast today, because I was passing people right, and left, and zig zag, and over here and there and they were everywhere. I am really happy with my time especially since I was dodging the whole time.

According to the GPS it was 3.16, I wouldn't doubt it because of all the back and forth between people we did.

After the race we enjoyed the refreshments and the kids corner. They had a pool full of ducks the kids could catch and get some really great prizes. Loren skipped the net part and reached for a duck and went right into the pool. Oh man I laughed so hard! I wonder if people realized that it was my kid........hmmmm. Natalie got a poodle purse, and Loren a dinosaur coloring book. Overall it was a great day and I am impressed by so many people who came out for a great cause.

Great job, Laurie! This is a faster pace than my first race since starting to run again. Sounds like you had fun!

From Hilisvini on Tue, May 13, 2008 at 11:06:02

-7 is just okay?! I can't wait to see what great is.

I've been assuming that in my condition, the number one way to improve my times is to drop weight, which was going good, but stalled the last couple of weeks.

Anyway, I had a great time at "race for the cure". It was fun to see you and Krash Man again. I enjoyed reading your positive report on the race.

From Laurie on Tue, May 13, 2008 at 14:47:54

It's okay because last week was only -1 and because I'm still 16 lbs from my "normal" weight. I gained more than 20 in 6 months while working graves and not being careful what I ate. I guess I want to lose weight as fast as the biggest loser people but I don't have a personal trainer and I don't have that much time to work out.

The race for the cure was a blast. I hope you thought so too. Let me know when you are running Lake Park and I might be able to come out and join you.

From Hildisvini on Tue, May 13, 2008 at 17:32:10

I run most Tuesdays and Thursdays at about Noon. Sometimes Ben and Smeagol (from work ) run with me. We are all preparing for the DesNews 10K.

We start at the Spillman building, loop around the IHC and Discover card buildings for about a 2.9 mile run. Ben runs about my pace and Smeagol runs an 8.5 minute mile so he does an extra loop around the Discover Card building and tries to catch us before we get to the end.

It's the fox and the geese game.

Sometimes I see Marie. She is usually running the opposite direction with a couple of other runners. But I haven't seen her for a while.

I was so nervous to start this race. I started running with a friend of a friend, and we stayed together for about 6 miles.

The start of the half is a bit hard because that first big hill is only about a mile in.

mile 1 13:36
mile 2 14:21(this is the big hill)
mile 3 13:10
mile 4 13:30
mile 5 12:51
mile 6 13:22(I started running by myself after this mile)
mile 7 12:37
mile 8 12:29
mile 9 12:00
mile 10 11:37(5k pace)
mile 11 11:59
mile 12 13:11(rolling hills here slowed me down a bit)
mile 13 13:34(potty stop, more than a little irritating when you are that close to finishing)
mile .1 I'm not sure, I forgot to stop my watch but my daughter was running with me and we were doing a decent pace to finish.

Overall I am extremely pleased with this race. I want somewhere between 2:50 and 3:03, getting the bottom of the goal is great. In 4 weeks I went from not running to this. I am excited. I have decided that my goal for Portland marathon will be 4:59:59.

Emphasis on that four. I have never been faster than a 5:36, and I really want to get to the four area and I think if I can keep up the training I can do it.

Oh side note, I had a blast at the race watching all those fast running blog jerseys start to pass me at mile 10. It was fun to see them going so fast. I still have no aspirations to be that fast but definitely want to start moving closer to the from and finish half marathons well before the marathoners start coming through.  Oh on a side note, Once the police came through with the first marathoner, I made sure I stayed to the right where the officer told me to go to stay out of they way, no dodging around me needed :)

The extra distance was doing the kids race with my daughter, they loved the race and especially the clowns with the water.

Good job on the 1/2. I like your reports since you are at about my level and you seem to be pushing yourself so much. My first 1/2 will be the Provo in August. I hope I can get a 2:30.

From Laurie on Mon, May 19, 2008 at 12:06:59

I'm sure you can do it in 2:30! I hope to get to that point too. I just really need to watch my diet, I think a little less weight will make a big difference in time.

Good luck with your training-hey if you want to run with a group for the longer runs you might want to check out salt lake fit. I think you can still register and I am going to be running with them up until october. I won't be there this saturday we are camping with the inlaws, but next week for sure.

You did a awesome job on your half marathon. What many people don't know is that she only stared training 4 weeks ago and her longest run was only 8 miles 2 weeks before the race. Yes she did a marathon in Jan. but other than that she hasn't run much before that race. She did the crash course training program to get ready. It is crazy the things she does on little to none training.

Still battling some stomach issues after the race, I think the biggest culprit is not sticking to my diet.  I sort of have a "free" weekend.  Not good, so back to my healthier lifestyle.

Did one mile barefoot  on the treadmill walking at a 16 min pace.  I am having some toenail issues after the half.  I think this is what will be holding me back in my recovery.  Shins are where my muscles hurt the most except for the inner/upper right thigh twinges every time I bring that leg forward.

Goal this week-Keep moving, everyday!  Hoping to be able to run the dam half marathon in Rexburg next month.

My toe has finally healed and I am back to my training.  I got 2.6 miles in before my husband had to go to work.  I got woo wooed at today while running, it was just from some friends of mine but hey beggars can't be choosers.  The run felt great and I can feel the improvements but still have lots of work to do.

mile 1 12:06

mile 2 12:20

mile.6 11:45 pace (I was in a hurry to get back to the bathroom.)

I want to increase my speed but am unsure how to do it.  I know running 5-6 times a week is preferred but how do I do those run.  One hills, one sprint workout, slow miles, fast miles, one tempo run?  And what about weight training, core excersices, just double running and that on the same days?

Weight-still -7 but am very close to getting -8.  Next weight goal is to get back to my normal weight.  This is the weight I have been for most of the last 8 years.  After that it's making my license weight to be a lie by being too much!

Glad you are healed up! From the last few years, my experience on getting faster has always been speedwork and hill work. The speedwork once a week has really been the key for me!

Laurie, thanks for the note, I hope I can figure this blog thing out. I think this will be fun to email other runners, I sure enjoyed your bio and realize I need to do more on mine, we have a lot in common....races, times and SLC gals! I just noticed that they are doing Goblin Valley this Oct. again, however Anita is not the organizer, it will be the Green River Chamber of Commerce, I don't know how that will effect things. Goblin was my first 50k, and I loved it, nice rolling hills in the desert. It looks like you did a 50K as well, which one was it? Of the 3 I have done, I liked Red Mountain the best, it was fabulous! Thanks for writting Laurie!

I did the Helen Klein 50k in Sacramento November of last year. When is the Red Mountain? My husband like the goblin one, mainly I think because of the shirt. "Can't stop, goblins will get me" Maybe if I had a partner in crime,(ie my husband who runs twice as I do I might be convinced to try another one -with better training. :)

From leslie peterson on Sat, May 31, 2008 at 15:38:39

Oh my gosh, I have been dreaming of doing the Helen Klein, but I am afraid of biting off more than I can chew. Isn't it a 50 miler as well? What did you think of it?? I did Goblin the year you did, I love the race shirt too! That is nice your husband runs with you, My husband is mountain biker and bikes along side me. I just did the Red Mountain 50k last week, it was my favorite 50k so far. I am trying to drop a few pounds, it is hard with all the running, trying to figure out the balance, or course after a long run, I feel I deserve a reward!!!! I have been on Weight Watchers since Nov. and have only lost 8 pounds! Oh, well , I am healthy and feel great, I just don't have the sleek runners body I would like.

Couldn't get outside this morning so I did a treadmill workout.  I started at 3.5 mph and did about a mile at full incline, (whew, that was tough even that slow).  Then I started and 4mph and did one minute and continued to increase speed 1mph/minute.  After a minute at 7mph, I did two minutes a 4mph, then a minute at 5,6,7,and 8 mph.  Then a VERY slow 3minute walk to cool off.

I know I could do better outside without the kids, but I'm glad I got this in.  I really want to do a 5K at the 7mph speed.  That would be so awesome.  Just keep up consistency!

Okay, day 3 in a row.  I AM GOING TO RUN 6 TIMES A WEEK.  I AM GOING TO R UN SIX TIMES A WEEK. I AM GOING TO RUN 6 TIMES A WEEK.

See the reason I repeat that is because I am going to do, not try, not see if I can, I just have to do it if I want to improve.

So heres the run for today.  First rule, take it easy, second you can run with your GPS but NO LOOKING!   I almost cheated twice but caught myself.  Third, just keep going.

There was a little cheating because I forgot to take off all of the alerts off so I had a beep every six minutes which gave me a hint as to  my time, and it also beeped everytime my speed was faster that 11:00, then it beeped at a mile, but I know this course really well so it wasn't too much of a surprise, so I turned up my music and really started to ignore the beeps.

 Mile one 11:51

Mile two 11:30

Mile three 11:03

Total time for 3.1 was 35:28, that's almost 30 seconds faster than the race for the cure about 3 weeks ago.  Ha ha, I just beat my 5k time during a training run, I was working but I wasn't dying.  Oh yeah.  (This was a run a lot better than the 5k, where I had a 10:40 first mile and then died).

Great job!

I am not sure if you saw my reply from yesterday, but you are more than welcome to join us whenever you like. Right now our Wed/Fri's are our light days - 3 miles with no worry about our pace and then we do some light weights afterwards. The rest of the days are a little heavier on both mileage and pace but the more the merrier.

This morning I did 20 minutes of ab workout. I can feel how week my core is while I am running. So I am going to include abs 2/3 x's a week too.

I also just barely slipped in and made it in for Hobblecreek registration. I am running 2-3 miles tonight when my husband gets off of work. I am thinking for a slow day I will do my half marathon pace.

Also, I am going to run 6 days a week, and see how well I am improve from Ogden Half (2:50) and see how close to 2 hrs I can get in Hobble creek by running 6 days a week and increasing mileage 10% a week and maintaining miles every third week. I'll be back later to put my miles on.

Got out tonight and did a little over two miles. I think the total time was about 30 minutes, but we had about 3-5 minutes waiting at crosswalks. My partner tonight was my four year old daughter riding her bike. We had a nice talk about why she has the horn and she got to beep several times to let people know she was coming. We also had some walking while I was cramping and doing my best to make it to the restroom, where I didn't even have time to shut the door. I'm a bit tired but doing okay.

This is day 4 in a row, I'm only getting 5 days this week because I didn't run Sunday or Monday. But it will be 6 next week.

Well then that means you need two PR this year. You can do it. You already have a good base under you and now it is time to build on it.

Good thing that today is the preplanned rest day!  I spent almost 11 hours driving in the car with my two kids to go visit Grammie in the mountains.  I actually had a wonderful time the kids were dang near perfect for the trip and I listened to The Host by Stepbanie Meyer, my only regret is that I forgot my i-pod so I can continue to listen to it during my runs this week.

Found out I have a running partner here.  My little brother says he will come run with me.  But I have a feeling I will only have my partner for the first run.  I don't like  running here, it's just two darn hilly, think East side of Salt Lake Valley but worse, more like living in Emmigration Canyon. Hill will humble me, Hills will make me stronger, Hills will make sure I don't beat my recent 5k time again, and THE HILLS WILL NOT WIN!

Well, I did my first California run today, I think I am going to start earlier.  It was 85 degrees by 9:30.  I had a really steep downhill to start and then a slight up hill followed my a mile of slight down.

Mile one 12:24

Mile two 14:57(two minute stretching after first mile.)  At about 1.1 I turned onto Irishtown road to hit some more uphill(not that I am really into running uphill, I just wanted the uphill to be in the first half of the workout not the entire second half.)  Then at 1.5 I hit the top of the hill and saw the downhill again.  Oh BOOGERS! I exclaimed, so I turned left onto Spagnoli Mine Rd which appeared to be level, turns out it was also just a trick and low and behold, more hills.

Mile three 12:07, had some decent down hill here and then only a few short steep uphill.

Mile four 12:07, hey looking at these times, I'm impressed! SCORE!  Not too bad of a slow down considering all of the inclines.  I had a lot of slight uphill, with a really big hill up to my parents house.

Running here is hilly, but it is beautiful, there is a reason they call it Pine Grove.  I also discovered the old cemetary I didn't know was here.  I'll have to go check it out because some of them have to be over a hundred years old.  Pine Grove was settled during the gold rush.  It also smells good, when you aren't running along the main highway.

On a training note, my breathing was still fast, but my lungs never burned or ached, is that because of the altitude? It's not really low here  but is about 2600 ft .

Day 1 of running partner...........................well he stayed in bed.  I'll try my best tomorrow to get him out.  I hope to show him up a little :)

Nice mile times

Today was slower due to several factors.  One it's dang hilly here, two I donated whole blood yesterday so I am a little short on iron.  Three I traded my running partner (little brother) for dad.  It was a great trip.  Same as yesterday except we stopped at the Pine Grove cemetary, the oldest grave I found was from 1866.  But the coolest part was we found the grave of a marine that was part of the brigade that raised the flag  in Iwo Jima after the bombing of Hiroshima.

Man who ever knew there was so much history in my little town.

Oh side note, I was noticing in one area that the smell of the pines was unusually strong, you could even smell the sap, oh wait, look a whole fleet of wood chipping trucks were lined up there.  No wonder it smelled so good.

That you for the support. I am so looking forward to running behind you next week. On a 3 mile run I should only finish about 6-7 minutes behind :) I hope you are feeling better, I hate those mornings where I wake up on the wrong side of the bed, I feel worse because it affects everyone in my family!

Can I count a day at the theme park tomorrow as my workout? It's going to be long day, I just don't see how I am going to be able to run without getting up at 4 am. Any advice?

Total Distance

I know the distance stinks, but let me explain.  I am going to run 6 days a week and I found out on Monday we are going to great america(theme park) today.  We are talking a 3 hr dive each way, plus 10 hrs in park.  How was I going to run.  Well mother nature made sure I was awake and couldn't get back to sleep.  She let a skunk off somewhere close and it invaded my room, so off I went, 1 mile up at 15:58 and one mile down at 11:20, it would have been faster the the hill to my parents house is the worst hill around, and it's gravel which slows footing some.

Day 3 in a row and little brother is still sleeping, he's got three days to try and make it up.

California vacationing while putting in the hard miles -- that's good sugar to help the medicine go down. (unless you are a hard core runner, then switch that around)

And good job on the hills. Tracy and Christina have convinced me that I should add a little more of that to my routine.

Glad to hear Krash Man is running again.

Oh, today was so easy!  Well it was and it wasn't.  I got up fairly early and my mom signed me into the local gym as a guest (so it wouldn't cost 10 bucks) and I ran on the treadmill.  Ohhhh flat, so nice.  It was really hot, you think in California they would put air conditioning in the gyms, but its just fans.

I was a little stiff the first mile and finished about a 12:30.  Stretched for a minute and then I kept going.  I don't think I have ever sweat so much.  My heart rate was good about 160 the whole time, my legs were working but not dying, breathing quick not labored but I was dripping buckets!!!

Middle three miles at 12 min pace mile five was 11:00 minutes and it still felt really good.  Maybe the hills haven't been so bad after all.

The greatest part, I felt awesome in the gym, I was the youngest person there and the only going faster than a walk. I was like a gym junkie or something.

Day 5 in a row, I think I can handle this.

Lauri, How many days in a row are you wanting to run? 5 days in row is great.

From Laurie on Fri, Jun 06, 2008 at 16:17:53

6 days a week is wheat I am going to do until Portland at least. That is the main philosophy of the fast running blog and Sashas big push to start. 6 days a week, no excuses, to be a better runner. I got five last week and this will be my first week of 6 but its really not that bad and doesn't hurt.

From leslie on Fri, Jun 06, 2008 at 17:27:09

That is interesting Laurie, where do I read about his philosophy on running? Looks like tomorrow you will make the 6 day goal, and even while on a vacation!

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Jun 06, 2008 at 17:53:50

Leslie - right here. Run 6 days a week, no excuses, no exceptions. There is no elite runner that does not do at least that. In fact, that is just about the only thing they have in common as far as training is concerned - some do a lot of speed, others do a lot of base, you see a lot of variations in what they do on those days and how fast. Elites have essentially the same bodies that obey the same laws as everybody else, they just happen to have more natural speed. The fact that it is impossible to compete at the elite level without training 6 days a week shows that there is something about it. If there was not, you would see people following 3-5 days a week schedule competing at the top level all the time.

We've seen a lot of evidence of 6 days a week magic on the blog. I think if I took the time to summarize it, I could probably find 30 cases of 30+ minute marathon PRs documented with daily blog entries when somebody went from less than 6 days a week schedule to 6 days a week. That would be pretty much everybody who tried.

From leslie on Fri, Jun 06, 2008 at 18:19:46

Wow! Sasha how did you know I asked that question? This is very cool. I am going to make 6 days a week be my new goal, thank you for the information!!

From Laurie on Fri, Jun 06, 2008 at 19:44:10

Sasha, thanks for answering Leslies question, I wasn't sure where I would have found it besides a training request.

Leslie, I really like having this as my thing now. I have been hit and miss in training. That's why I don't improve. This is a plan I can follow. I've been very happy about all my workouts. I have never truly run for myself before, just for something else, and had my husband pushing me out the door. So I have been pleased to be away from home with less than ideal(ie easy) running conditions, and without my husband, I'm glad to be stepping it up and proud of it.

We'll can watch each other and make sure we get the 6 days and avoid the goose eggs :)

From leslie on Fri, Jun 06, 2008 at 20:46:40

Okay, this is pathetic and I know it, but I did it.  My babysitter(gram) came home late then it was dinner and clean for company.  I am tired and my legs are tired.  My shins ache and this mile was all up hill, crazy how you can't get away from that.  I got in about 6 flights of stairs too, so there is a mild bit of redemption.  Tuesday next week will be the most difficult.  Driving back to Utah that day.  10 miles in the car, and nobody will be here is the morning so I can run, everyone leaves at about 5 am.  Maybe I can get little brother to do it, because it must be done before I leave.

Wow, I don't think I have ever thought so hard about how I could get a run in.  This week was slightly lower than last but good considering my being out of town.  Next week we will see a 10% increase and have close to 22 miles.

And I ran up the whole hill driveway moster to the end(I haven't made it to the very top this trip).

Do you ever get the feeling that you are going slower and slower?  This week has been so hard on me and I feel like I am falling behind in speed even though my mileage is okay.  Maybe in a week or so I will feel better when I am back into my normal routines and eating habits.

Nice run! You are super mom to sleep over at the zoo. My kids would love that but I have missed two of my favorite races already this year due to injury and one more due to a trip so I am going to be selfish and run Westfest. My kids were wanting to run with me but my husband is out of town that weekend and they have not been training. Last year my daughter was the last finisher because she walked at a snails pace. I told them that could never happen again. You can only run it if you train and "run" it.

From Laurie on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 23:48:24

My kids aren't coming to zoo they are too young. And you wouldn't have to miss your race. You drop the kids off at the zoo and leave them there for the night:)

Oops. I was gonna go run outside but right as we were falling asleep Chris remembered he had his early morning physical therapy. So as soon as I awoke it was get ready to go onto the treadmill.

I got in 2.5 before first child came into my room, but he did great and just played on my bed for the rest of the time. Child two came in right as I was finished. Hurray!

Mile one 12:30

Mile two 12:15

Mile 3 12:00

Mile 4 11:37

Weight change -9 lbs. The goal this week is to do 4 miles everyday and to keep them about 30 -60 seconds slower than my most recent 5k time. I think I have been trying to keep my times as low as possible, I believe if I slow down just a tad that getting more miles in a week shouldn't be so hard.

I walked another 1.5 round trip to the park and back with the kids. I walked as fast as I could pushing the stroller.

Chris got dibs on the outdoors today so I ran on the treadmill, again.............good thing I like to listen to Chunga on the radio.

I'm finding it hard to run slow for shorter distances I just can't stay at the same pace I love to pick it up some.

mile 1 12:16

mile 2 12:03

mile 3 11:41

I basically kept the same pace but about every half mile I would jump up the speed to 10 min miles for about 30 sec, just enough to stretch my legs out some but not enough to get my respiration out of control. I know the goal is 4 miles today but I am walking to the childrens musuem from my sis-in-laws and I have no idea how far it is, but I am guessing we will be pushing strollers with two/three kids each for about 3-4 more miles today. So I'll update when we get back.

We are back and it was 4.4 miles pushing 2-3 kids in the stroller about 20 min pace.  It still hurt though.  Will all this extra walking affect my training, is it good for me?  I am planning on increasing my running miles 10% each week and keeping my walking miles seperate.  Is that okay?

From Hildisvini on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 10:44:47

I notice that your later miles are usually faster than your beginning miles. I that on purpose, or does it just get easier to run?

I find it natural for me to run my first mile faster, then slow down -- having to put more and more effort in later miles into keeping my speed up.

I was just wondering if you were speeding up intentionally.

Good work!

OH BOY!!!!

I, um, just volunteered to fill in a leg of WBR.  wow, I've never done it before and I have never met the people  I will be running with so lets see how it goes!

Well maybe getting outdoors isn't that great after all. It really has started warming up. We finally got the swamp cooler going but it had a leak, oh joy, and then the vent in the ceiling got knocked out. Ugh, just more work to do.

I think the walking miles are hurting me some right now, but I think I could get used to it. It took me a mile to loosen up and not feel so tight and tired.

mile 1 14:00

mile 2 12:02

mile 3 12:32 (this has a considerable amount of uphill so it is a bit harder.

mile 4 12:25

And 7am is not early enough to run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2.5 barefoot miles very sllloooowww on the treadmill.  And it was broken up some to take care of a sick child.  My husband is already in Logan to help with the start line he will be there until all the teams have started.

No results are posted yet, but I'm not sure how we stand. I know we were not competitive but I ran my best. I think I was the only person who stayed within 1 minute of my predicted time.

I was runner 7. Start time 6:30 pm First leg relatively flat little downhill, and yet a rookie at heart I took off too fast. Temp 90.

mile times 11:22, 12:17, 12:18, 12:23

Second leg, start time 3:19am, two hours of sleep, temp 38. This has a good downhill in the first mile and then climbed higher with each mile. Total elevation gain was over 600ft.

miles times 12:17, 13:03, 15:15, 15:07

Last leg, temperature 95, start time 2:30am , but there was a breeze and it didn't feel like the sun was cooking me but the radiant heat coming up from the asphalt was frying me. Oooh it was so hot. I had the van stop at least every mile so that I could spray myself with water and that really helped. This leg was really flat and quite nice to run.

mile times 11:40, 12:41, 11:48, 13:20

I had lots of fun, I am a little tight and sore but not incapacitated and feel like I got a really good workout. Missed the FRB teams but it's hard to see everyone in this race. Ragnar not only hurt our runner but killed our car as it overheated. We were pawning off our last runners with any car that drove by so that they at least would be where they needed to wait.

Our team won a case of myomed, something like the most beautiful disaster, after disaster, after disaster. We were an all girl team called Darla Angels. Darla was the team captain sis in law who died last year at 38 after an 8 year battle with breast cancer. So our car was decorated in that theme. It was a bit crude in some places but we laughed and so did some onlookers.

Good job! That is so great you did so well and so so close with your predictions! Our Runamoks van 1 thought we saw you running the 7th leg in Eden! We were gassing up at a station... We were not sure but it was about 6:39 - 7:00ish. I'm glad everything worked out ok with your team, and that is cool you won the Myomed stuff! It was great to see Chris at the start!

Easy miles on the treadmill.  My legs felt heavy and stiff, not sore, just stiff as I started.

mile times, 13:15, 13:02, 12:45, 12:30, and 8:30 time(not pace) for the last .7mile. Total time 1 hour.  I was feeling pretty good by the time I hit mile 3.  There were two VPB, I know I was running at home but one bathroom and two kids makes privacy pretty rare :)

My stomach is still not happy from wasatch back and nothing sounds good so I don't want to eat.  I try to eat somethings and after two bites its blah!  So for the rest of the day I need to focus on getting at least 1400-1500, good healthy calories in.

I ran out to Lake Park again, I just can't seem to resist those rolling hills. And it is pretty scary too! You think you are safe running on a sidewalk 10ft away from the road (speed limit 35mph) And that divider is lined with medium sized trees but all that security is smashed when you see the skid marks, the tree ripped up by the roots and broken in half, and the tire tracks don't stop until they have gone over and past your "safe" sidewalk.

But on the other hand, I love warmer weather and early morning golfers because that means the bathroom right by the trail are open!

Mile times 12:51, 12:19, 12:16, 11:52, 11:46. I know one think for sure, I could not have done another mile and have it be faster than my last one. I was pretty done today, but not bad for the person who was seriously doubting her hobby this morning and questioning why I even do this.

Added 1.5 miles with a quick walk and a  fully loaded double stroller. (Free lunch for the kids).  They didn't want to ride in the car, but in the stroller, hmmmmm, I don't get it.  Maybe they were just looking for a way to wear me out.  Nothing new.

Awesome job! I love running out through Lake Park. We usually save it for the weekends when there is less traffic. You must live pretty close to us becuase our mileage when we head out there is 6.3.

We are going at 5:30 tomorrow morning for a really easy three if you want to come.

Chris got outdoors today, because I got it yesterday. But the poor guy came back to me with road rash. Lost traction on some gravel in the new roundabout.

For me, 5 miles on the treadmill. Total time 60:35.

Mile times 12:45, 12:15, 12:07, 11:52, 11:30.

It feels good to be running this pace. But I, like a lot of people, feel like it's taking too long to get faster. I only have 3 months until my marathon. I know, get the distance, speed will come. I have just barely started getting my weekly mileage over 30 and this is big for me. So just stop, breathe, oooh hooooooooooooo, okay, mileage is very important. It will be your best marathon ever if you keep this up! (I tend to talk to myself alot, especially during the last few miles of the marathon.)

I don't know about anybody else but I got some free myomed from WBR am really enjoying it.  There is that soreness and a little bit of achyness that I don't even realize is there until I'm ready to go to bed and then it's like restless leg syndrome, but putting the myomed on makes it tingle and feel good and then I have no problems going to sleep. So my two cents worth.  I like it, I use it, but I won't pay $20 a tube for it.

The secret is listening to Chunga on the radio. They talk a lot in the morning and he goes off on the weirdest things but I love listening. I can't passively listen so running lets me do something else I enjoy too! One plus of the treadmill, I can control a good pace for me without getting excited and going too fast and then have to walk.

From leslie on Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 10:15:46

That is so true on the treadmill, I forgot there are some real pluses, keeping a certain pace is one. Now what is Chunga??? Or should I say who is Chunga??

From Laurie on Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 11:04:06

Chunga is the morning show host on 101.9 and he is a hoot. They had a game they used to play and i kept winning, so much fun.

From Laurie on Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 11:28:09

Kim,

Thanks for noticing. I think I am going to be part of a team made of couples next year. Do you want me to check with the captain and see if you and Tom could join? Right now I know we have 3 couples (half the team). Would be so much fun!

From Kim on Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 11:32:37

Oooohhhh! Very tempting! I'll have to see if Tom's group is planning to stay together or not. We have talked about doing a couple's team if his team fizzles out. We will know more next week after their 'after race team meeting'.

From Tom on Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 11:37:29

Kim let's DO IT! I've already kind of hinted to Paul that I was wanting to do something different next year and the team has never had any trouble finding runners so I think this could work! It would be a BLAST!

From Kim on Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 11:42:48

Tom...are you sure?! Do you want to wait until the team meeting?

Laurie,If you don't mind asking the captain what he thinks that would be great.

From Tom on Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 11:48:25

OK Kim maybe we should talk it about it a little more.... But at the moment I'm really liking the idea of running on a couples team in an environment that is a bit more "fun" oriented vs. "competitive" oriented like my guys team. Even though we tell everyone we're just a "fun" team we pretty much are liars and everyone ends up trying to kill themselves on their legs.

From Krash man on Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 13:13:48

I know what you mean when we say we are just there for fun. The competitiveness is just so deeply ingrained in to some of us it is hard to run "just for fun". I have always run on a semi-competitive time. I think it would be fun to be on a couples team. I still think I would kill my self on my legs, but that is me just ask Laurie.

From Jamie Atlas on Sun, Jun 29, 2008 at 00:13:52

Hey Kim and Tom - make sure you balance out your treadmill running with outdoor running - treadmills can really promote joint pain and muscle imbalances if there isn't a balance between the two.

Good luck with the working out! It is awesome to see the community you have created here.

Cheers

PS

I wrote a blogpost titled 'never run on a treadmill again' if you are interested in reading more about how the two are different

Actually Jamie, Tom and I hardly ever run on treadmills. I'm not quite sure where you got that info or if you are thinking of someone else. We don't own one and I don't have a gym to use, so I pretty much don't have a choice. Which is nice, because I agree...the less use of a TM, the better.

From Jamie Atlas on Wed, Jul 02, 2008 at 01:36:36

Apologies Kim and Tom - I meant that to be for Laurie the Chunga girl ;) Although I can totally see her point with the treadmill keeping her at a certain pace being beneficial - I know when I hear certain songs I just get in the zone and then about 4 minutes later wonder why I am completely stuffed :)

This was a nice long, slow run. I don't even want to put miles times because they are so slow. But I was breathing good, my legs are just tired. Part of it I think is because I have had a hard time eating well. Not eating junk food, I've just had something going on and I feel sick no matter what I eat. I lost 6 pounds last week and eat everything I wanted. I drink only water, and sometimes skim milk and was eating very healthy because that is all my stomach can handle but I have a feeling that it wasn't enough. I feel weak. Or maybe it is just a monday and you don't work as well if it is a MOnday.

times: 12:11, 12:26, 12:36, 12:00, 11:04. Don't know why I was slowing down in the middle maybe hills, maybe just getting into the groove, but the last mile was a bit too fast and too quick of a stop because I nearly lost the contents of my stomach as I heaved my way to the bathroom. Wasn't quite sure how I wanted to employ the toilet first, top half or bottom. Well mind over matter and I controlled the heaving and just cooled off.

Miles 15:00, 13:30, 12:30, 12:30 the only bad part is that I became a mass murderer, there were so many colonies of ants right in the middle of the path, I couldn't avoid them all so a few met an early demise.

Mile times 10:56, 10:30, 10:28, .1 in 48 seconds.  I do believe this is my second fastest 5k ever, and I can't believe how much I have improved in just a couple months.  Mile one have .5 miles of an incline and then there were two small rolling hills but a decent amount of down with some flat as we headed north on the course.

Wow, only 3 more minutes off and I will have an all time PR and that was done before the birth of my second baby.  Sasha told me to go out at a 10min pace and see what happens.  I thought he was crazy, because my training miles rarely go under 12 min pace.  But I took off and kept the pace(slowed down for the hill) but I wasn't so far off from a 10 min pace.  WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW -----sorry I am just tickled pink and couldn't be happier.

I think the warmup mile helped, I used to think the people who ran before the race were nuts but it really helps to loosen up and get the slowness out.  Then I ran a little afterwards and along side my kids for their race.

Happy 4th of July everyone!!!

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Jul 04, 2008 at 23:07:35

Good progress. Based on your splits looks like you might have had about another 40 seconds in you. Warm-up before a race is a must unless the race is a marathon. Even then a short warm-up is a good idea just to shake up your bowels to avoid potty breaks during the race.

You should be able to run around 31 minutes in Draper Days and maybe a bit under 30 in Minuteman 5 K if you continue to train consistently and eat right. I suggest you sign up for both.

From Laurie on Sat, Jul 05, 2008 at 12:44:29

Thank you all for your wonderful support. I really appreciate it.

And my thought that runners were crazy to warm-up was how I thought before I started running. Funny how different things are from behind the starting line instead of watching it...........

From tarzan on Sat, Jul 05, 2008 at 19:57:39

Congratulations. I am hoping to get my 5K PR down below 30 in the next few months. I actually have a 10K in Italy in September and would be thrilled to get under an hour.

I will be moving your way in a week or so. Let me know if you ever want a crazy running partner.

WAIT A MINUTE - I just looked at your race times. I think we started Des News together earlier last year.

From Laurie on Sat, Jul 05, 2008 at 21:44:06

Tarzan, I did start desnews early last year. So you may be right. But yeah, I would love a running partner:) The crazier the better. To quote everyone else on the blog "RUNNING PARTNERS ROCK!"

Very slow long miles.  I started at the church by the capitol, and headed through city creek canyon to the post office on Sunnyside Ave and I turned around there.  I started slow and stayed that way but I need slow, I used up all my speed yesterday.

Time to cut back a little this week.  4 regular easy runs, only one medium run, and one long run.  But I am going to get at least one 10 mile bike ride this week.  We are going to do the Antelope Island Creatures of the night bike ride. 22 miles I think.  That is on July 18th.

Thank you such much for the wonderful words. I'll be overjoyed if I can get below this "normal" weight. 4 more pounds and I hit the 10% weight watchers mark. yippee.

For the bike ride they have a costume contest, I told my husband he could be edward, and I'd be bella. He didn't like that (Twilight series) So I am trying to convince him to be a mosquito, and I will be a big drop of blood. Any other ideas for the costume contest?

Hey guess what?   I woke up this morning with lips like Angelina Jolie!!!  Too  bad it's from cold sores and not botox.  I get cold sore from stress and sun.   Well we haven't had that much sun lately(ha ha ha ha) and I haven't been running my longest miles ever (ha ha ha ha)

Okay, I was planning on a 4mile run, but my new loop is a bit more than four and during mile three I was fighting peristalsis pretty bad so I added another quick out and back to the restroom on the golf course.

Time 1 hour for 4.6 miles.  Then then .15 cool down on the way home.

I contemplated not running today but I just couldn't handle it! It's just too much a habit now, and I LOVE IT!!

1.5 miles as promised very fast walk, best I could handle with the stroller, but my legs still felt it.

Chunga day. I slept in and so had to suffer the consequences of the treadmill and air conditioning(okay so it's a swam cooler and extra fan in my room but still).

miles, 12:30, 11:53, 10:50, then .25 cool down. So I am thinking maybe 12:30 might be too slow for average running days and might need to start focusing on keeping the pace right around 11:30 to 12:00 from now own.

I will get 1.5 more in this afternoon when we go out to the lunch, so ta ta for now I'm off to the showers quoting P!nk "Cause I don't do wanna be a stinky girl" wait maybe she says stupid girl, either way it's not me:)

Well at least when I do a new little route I am never shorting my miles and end up with a little extra. 6.4 miles in 1:18 (12:17 avg) not too bad. Ran 2.5 miles with lisa and had fun chatting. Mile 3 had a potty stop. Whenever I think about running I dread it but then I go do it and it feel good and I don't mind it.

Weight change: none (okay not true it was +.2 but I consider insignificant and therefore doesn't count-because the potty stop happened AFTER I weighed in)

1.5 in the afternoon with the kids in the stroller.  Had a great time at the park.  Also, this is so exciting......I put on my first pair of skinny pants :)  I have much skinnier pants I will work my way into but I've made my first step.  They fit just right with even a bit of give yeah!

Okay, somehow I managed to gain two pounds since yesterday.  I don't get it and I hate scales.  Maybe the cookies from this weekend finally caught up to me?

Well ran out to lake park, then out and around discover card turned around and came home.  I had a hard time loosening up.  Not really sore just slow.

miles 13:20, 12:48, 12:22, 11:52, can you tell I am starting to feel good.  This next mile was really slow because I sprinted up the hills and the walked to the next hill to sprint up it.(Max speed 6:13)  Almost lost my tummy on one of them, but I guess that is why they call them hill kills.  So mile 5 was 14:03, and 6 was 12:25.

Oh and when I got home, I found out, I um, *blush*, had put my underwear on inside out!

PM, 1.8 miles with kids in stroller to the park, to a friends and then home.

Feeling better today, but still couldn't get up in the morning so I bagged the running and just got ready for the Creatures of the Night ride.  We rode our bikes over 22 miles from the Marina in Antelope Island to the ranch and back and oh my goodness.  It was a hard ride.  I guess I am pretty inexperienced in riding, just like I used to think all walking was not allowed in a race I found there were lots of people who would push there bikes up a hill.

We one 3rd place in the costume contest.  They like my mosquito helmet, and my husbands red outfit with a cape emblazoned with O+.  My children dressed up like a witch and batman.  They did really good.  On the way back to the marina we had a really strong headwind it was very discouraging and we ended up walking up the last really really big hill.  Plus the stroller with kids my husband was hauling was acting like a parachute to him. Also I was dying to get off my bum, it hurt so bad, I am not used to that yet.

We got to my aunt's house around 2a.m. and were beat.

Okay, 2nd week attempt at redemption.  I'm off to a decent start.  I ran with Leslie and  Tarzan out on the pipeline trail.  I think I have a new addiction.  I like trails, they are so remote and so beautiful, plus it's cooler up there than in the valley.

I ran with tarzan up until I needed to become a cave woman and utilize some leaves, avoiding all oaks, and take care of business.  We all ran about the same time but got different distances.

My husband was so sweet, I am watching all the nieces today and he agreed to watch them so I could make the run until he had to go to work.

Thanks to Leslie and Maurine for letting me join in with you today, and Leslie I hope the beauty of it today helped with your spirits so you can be there for your daughter.  You are all in our prayers.

PM 1.5 miles to the park and back.  I made, I mean I let, all the kids run, walk, skip, and duck duck goose their way there and back. (Ages 5,4,3,2)  And then when we got home I made them, wait, LET them pull out all the blankets and pillows into the front room and got them cold drinks, turned lights off, drew the curtains and put on the chipmunks.  I am so nice(insert devious, sinister laugh) wa ha ha ha ha ha

I like the idea of someone checking on me, that will help motivate me until I get back on my feet. Right now my biggest motivation for walking/running is my back. It has hurt non stop for probably 3 or 4 weeks. I keep seeing Grandpa and taking it as easy as I can but it's not helping. I'm going to start trying to strengthen it and walking and hopefully that will help it get better.

Race: DesNews 10k (6.2 Miles) 01:04:45
Total Distance

Well, this was my first 10k ever!  I kind of skipped it when I was training and went straight for the half.

First review of goals for race, since my last 5k three weeks ago was a 32:42 I was hoping just to slow it down a little bit and maintain under an 11m/m pace and come in under 1:08.  According to Sasha's calculator it predicted I  should break 1:07, and if I wanted to run my 5k pace and keep it up for the whole race I would barely break 1:06, so I was a little off from my goals,

LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME, HAND IN THE AIR, LIKE IT'S MEANT TO BE ALIVE!!!

So all in all I am very proud of my race since both the first and second 3.1 miles were faster than my most recent 5k time.  I call that an achievement.  My tummy hasn't been very happy today but I don't care cause I am.

splits

1-10:21 still working out some stiffness and moving, trying to let my legs go down the hill without creating too much breathing

2-10:15 starting to feel better not breathing too hard and letting the hills go.

3-10:47 water stop here so I slowed a little plus this mile and a decent little incline, it was fun to jog up but slowed me down a tad.

4-10:23 I am starting to calculate what my numbers can be and I'm telling myself I can do it, 2 miles is nothing, just relax don't think to much and go (Don't let the mind say you  are tired when your legs feel good)

5-10:09 I run past my in-laws and family.  My mother in law was being interviewed and she was talking about me running and right as they were about to cut off I ran past so they got a good shot of my hindside. YUCK! I'm so embarrassed.  I hope nobody recognized me. I slowed just a tad to shout out my time and milage to my husband.

6-10:43 I'm getting tired and it's all about the mind now and just keep moving.

.2 2:08 I really and just focusing on the finish line, I had to pick it up a little because I knew I was at 1:04 but didn't know the seconds and the finish line was sooooo close.

Once I crossed I waved off all of the nice people who wanted to get my chip off but I just kept walking for a little bit to get everything under control.  I didn't want to give anybody a show.  I slowly jogged about 2 miles back to our spot for the parade and got a few call about running the wrong way.  I enjoyed the parade except for the verbose drunk that decided to camp out under the awning our family had brought, and for the 3-4 times my body made me run for the porta potties.

What a triumphant race! I just love that you beat your recent 5K time twice in a row!

And also--races are not beauty pageants. Nobody looks good in a race if they are going all-out. I've watched people come in from the St. George Marathon, and honestly, I am more inspired by the people who come in looking like garbage than those who look like they've just been out for a stroll through the park. Hats off to you!

Nice slow miles for an active recovery.  It was more of a glorified walk, and there was some walking as I tried to find a restroom but they don't lock the restrooms on the golf course during the summer, hip hip hooray!

I'm a little tight and tired but not hurting from the race so that's good.  I'm still trying to figure out what I am going to do tomorrow.

It took just over an hour to do the five miles and they felt good.  I am recovering and hopefully get 40+ miles this week.  I need some longer runs, I am lacking in that part for my marathon.

"The things you used to think of as mistakes are now just learning experiences, so don't waste time beating yourself up. You'll encounter small failures — everyone does. But you'll achieve success, too." Jillian Michaels from biggest loser.

I made a mistake yesterday.  We were running out of time before the circus(which really wasn't a circus at all-no animals, no trapeze, no highwire) anyways I split some fries with my husband and ate a honeybutter scone. UGH!  I was up half the night wanting to puke my guts out.  I am really starting to learn that unhealthful foods make me ill.  I have given up a lot things I used to love because they make my stomach sick.  I just hadn't figured it out with the fries yet.

4.3 miles in the afternoon on treadmill, unsure on time because the kids kept resetting it for me but at least I knew my distance.  11.25 mile bike ride with some major head wind a lot of the way (remember the high wind storm warnings we had-oh yeah baby!)  Wow, I pulled the kids in the trailer for extra resistance for a harder workout, it took me over an hour but it was still killer with that wind.  We also so a truck who blew a tire and started a bunch of fires along 201 freeway, it got really big very fast.  Then we saw all the fire trucks come flying by but by the time we made it back they had it out.  Hurray for the fire department!

And how are things going with you and family?

From leslie on Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 13:18:49

Thanks for the comment on the fries. I never knew they affected me so much but I haven't eaten more than 3-4 at a time for about six months. Now I know. It felt soooo slow to start was wondering what that bike ride did to me last night.  But I was doing better the second mile but slowed for the third, there was a lot of water on the sidewalks and I didn't want wet feet.  But on the bright side lots of water meant not a lot of duck poo! Mile for was good and 5 was fast almost 5k pace.  Then nice slow woggle for the last half home.....now I am debating what am I going to read today, new moon, or Mary Higgins Clark newest?

I'm doing my workout this evening, 10 mile bike 3-4 run, for practice for the triathlon on the 9th.

I made it out for my ride/run tonight. 10.2 mile bike in 49:30 and 3 mile run in 32:35, it  felt surpisingly good without too much jello from the bike ride.  I started out immediately under the 12 min pace and just kept picking it up finishing my last mile in under 10 minutes and I feel GREAT!!  I might even be able to pull off a 5k pr even at the end of the tri next weekend, wouldn't that be nice?

But I just wanted to blog this. Weight loss: -18 lbs. which I know is good but whenever I diet this is the range I can always get to, but once I lose 4+ pounds then I am in new territory.

Marion,

I was active before I had my son but not running six days a week, but usually ran 3 and did weight/strength training 2 days a week. But I was also on phentermine, and dieting/exercise is really easy when you are essentially on speed, have no appetite and all the energy in the world and can't sleep. But I stopped taking them got pregnant and almost returned to my previous weight minus 15 lbs. I am wanting to do this the right way this time.

So what is your 10% reward? I LOVE gel toes!

From Laurie on Fri, Aug 01, 2008 at 17:39:39

Thanks everyone for your support. I have decided to reward myself at 25lbs with a pedicure, I love them but hate going because my toenails are always in some stage of growing out.

As for my secret Hildisvini I really have changed my whole mental attitude about food. "eat to live, not live to eat" and I have been really trying to pay attention to how I feel when I eat something, ie the fries, doubt I'll try that again. Lots and lots of water. I don't drink calories except for 8-16oz of skim milk a day.

From Laurie on Fri, Aug 01, 2008 at 17:39:57

From Laurie on Fri, Aug 01, 2008 at 19:19:01

This was a great accomplishment considering my emotions this morning.  I had declared my retirement from running.  I am sick of training hard, sick of still be last in the pack, and sick of those terrible running photos were I am all thunder thighs and no chest.

I just have to think I am so close to being able to beat my 1/2 pr in two weeks.  I can't stop now.  I get mad at myself for not wanting to run. I did terrible with running while on vacation, and then I had a disappointing time during the run in the tri.  Plus my systems not right because I didn't eat right while on vacation either but I have done my shopping and it WILL go back to normal.

Okay enough of the whining it must stop and I will go out and run in the morning tomorrow, I think wed/thur will be evening because I am going to start prepping my classroom for the coming school year.

My first 1/2 mile was 6min then second 5, then there was a stoplight and a little bit of shopping and then about 11:30 for the last mile.  The inbetween stuff I'm not so sure on, but it was distance and I know if I keep it up and I will start feeling better everyday.

From Kim on Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 10:51:13

Hey girl! I think even the people who are speedy and have the 'elite' bodies get those same feelings at times! It seems we do hear discouragement from time to time here on the blog. It's good to voice those discouragement because there are others who feel they are the only ones who feel that way. Together we help boost each other up and make it through the hard times. I hope you can get out and enjoy the run for your own enjoyment and not worry about the things that are causing it to be less than enjoyable at the moment. Run for fun and better health! Bag the thoughts of having to do it a certain way or a certain time! Good luck! Sorry about the long, rambling comment!

Okay, this is a catch all for the last week. Sorry to leave you all hanging and I do feel loved not stalked and am happy to have you all watching out for me.  I did the crest trail with Leslie on Saturday, owh!  I couldn't walk normal until yesterday.  Dang that was hard.  We have had a ton of fun, swimming, arcades, phantom on the opera, tournament of the kings, buffets, m&m world.  All the freebie stuff, the aquarium.  too many buffetts......oh and the venetian gave us eighty bucks of credits to spend in the slots so we played their eighty and walked away with ninety cash of our"winnings"  which we got to keep.  Now that's what I call gambling.  Can't bear to put my own money in the things :)  thank you all for caring.  I have been a slacker, sort of, walking for 6-10 hours a day carrying kids is not easy but I didn't get official "runs" in.  But I did do some pool running, much cooler, tougher cardio man.

Breaking dawn was great, and I loved it.  We will be driving all day tomorrow and I will blog next time after I do my little tri on saturday.  Love you all :)

Oh and Leslie, remember how I told you that if anybody was hurt it would be my husband?  Well we went to the er after the run he bruised his hand pretty bad and we thought it was broke, but just some bone bruising, lots of pain, no cast, just loritab:)

Race: West Valley City Tri (3.2 Miles) 00:01:45
Total Distance
3.20

400 m swim 9 minutes

14 mile bike 56 minutes, goal was just under one hour.

3.2 miles, my cardio had been going for so long that I was nauseous to start the run and my shins were hurting. It took me 38 minutes. Yuck, I was so dissappointed.  I am not sure where I finished because they were so slow with results and I know that they do not remove the top finishers out of the prospective age groups.  Ugh that irritates me, probably because the female winner was in my group.  Does she really need the trophy and the ribbon?  I bet she doesn't even care.  I know a lot of people aren't impressed by the trinkets anymore and that is fine with me.

I don't think I could have done any better today but still feel like it was lacking.  My stomach was bugging me and I wasn't feeling so hot, and what happens in vegas doesn't stay there.  At least the extra calories didn't.  I have a little work to do, get 'em off fast and they aren't as hard to get off later right?

Okay, I know I have been a slacker and not a good blogging friend. But I am trying to be better, I have to hurry I need to get to my classroom.

.5 mile jog until my watch started

1.0 in 11:06 then second mile in 9:33 how's that for smokin'? Then .38 slow back to house. talk to you all later :)

Okay, I got in 18+ flights of stairs today hauling all my books to my classroom on the third floor. And guess what? I have a skeleton in my closet!!! A real, life, from a human skeleton. It's got to be really old but it is in really good shape. Not that I need one in my room but hey, it's really cool.

Oh side note, anybody want to pick up my packet for me? I can't make it down in time for Friday pickup and I am camping at the start line, so I don't want to drive to the finish to pick up my packet to drive back to the start.  I would get it from on Friday night so you wouldn't have to worry......please?

Started at a 12:30 pace to warm up and then continued to knock it up about every .5 miles. (Treadmill, I let chris have the outside today since I got it yesterday) Finished with under a 10m/m pace but it wasn't for very long.

Total time 46:22

My goal for hobble creek this weekend is 2:2something.  I did 2:50 in Ogden and I know I am going to smash that time.

Okay I now have 28 minutes to get ready for school, I got to move it move it, I got to move it move it I like to MOVE IT!!!

OH, just repeating myself, can anyone pick up my packet for me in on Friday, I would get it from you later that evening? Thanks!!!

Today on the email I received from Hobble Creek said that a picture ID will be required for packet pick up. I'm not sure if we could get around that some way or not. I would be glad to pick it up if they will let me. But I would probably have to get it to you the morning of the race instead of Friday evening.

From laurie on Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 18:18:24

Kim, thank you soooooooo much for offering, I thought it would be okay because their website said you only needed full name and birthday but my husband called this afternoon and he got the day off from work so I will be able to make down in time for friday night pickup.

But you are the greatest for trying to help!!!!

Race: Hobblecreek Half (13.1 Miles) 02:25:02
Total Distance
13.10

Wow what a beautiful day.  I had a great time and I got to meet Marion, Kim, Josee, Kelly.  Lots of shade, it wasn't hot, I felt great.  Goal was 2:2?.  So I did it.

mile 1 10:40

mile 2 10:33

mile 3 10:25

mile 4 10:20

mile 5 10:56 I was loosing satellite reception in the canyon during this mile and there is about .10 mile extra in this time.

mile 6  11:14 still loosing satellite here and this is about another .10 extra.

mile 7 14:28 line for the potty, and I didn't want to go in the woods because I knew I wouldn't be able to squat and I just needed to sit down to take care of business because I didn't know how long it would take.

mile 8 10:40

mile 9 11:06

mile 10 11:40 there were some extra hills plus I was slow at the water stop.

mile 11 11:13 now this is just fatigue slowness but not too bad.

mile 12 11:29

mile 13(.92) Remember I lost reception and my mileage is shorter that it really was. 11:15

I couldn't see the seconds on my watch, I need to changed that, because you know I would have worked it to get the 2:24, especially since I was sooooooo close.  I feel great I loved it.

I had a babysitter ready today was up before 5a to get a nice long run in but then the weirdest thing happened.  No not weird, awful! Advisory don't ready if you don't want to know....but maybe somebody has an idea.  I went potty(bm) and immediately afterwards I was having terrible cramp, pain, couldn't hardly move, couldn't sit down.  I cried and screamed for about two hours before I finally went back to bed, found a comfortable position and now another 4hrs later I still have residual pain, more of a discomfort but not fun.

Went out for a nice little stroll with the hubby and kids. It's really kind of nice to have him out and about, he sure likes it and that makes him  happy.

What a beautiful evening, it even smelled like fall.  I love fall, I just wish we had all the hours of sunshine still, I don't like the dark and I wont run in it by myself.  (Treadmill season) but with both chris and I working days we can get out in the evenings except for Thursday and Friday so that won't be so bad, just two treadmill days.

We didn't have a gps so we just went by cell phone time which was about 35min total but we stopped for a minute to visit with a cute couple from our ward who just had their first baby after 6 years of trying.:) I'm so happy for them.

Leslie, I want to make it to the party and I will try my best.  I will have to probably but in for something for the raffle but I don't have much luck but I always feel the pull of a possible win!!!!!

I think next time I won't take the kids.....ugh! I'm tired, I don't want to ride my bike, it's too hard, (crash into soccer post) Can I have a soda? I want a snack. I don't want to go home, I'm tired, I can't do it anymore.  Anything to get away from that.

School is going okay, vice principal said he was talking to principal and they had decided things must be going well because they haven't had any parent calls about me yet.................

Well I'm an not going to call this a  pathetic run because it's not since it is a run.  This is the first time in too long that I have made it out for more than one time in a week.  I have a babysitter lined up for my run on saturday.  I am running with salt lake fit that day.  They have a 21 mile run scheduled for that day. My plan is to just plug along and take it slow.  Slower than my marathon pace I just need some miles in.  I know they won't be the greatest considering my weekly mileage has been in the trash but I am scared to try portland with out at least an 18miler under my belt this season.

Time 25 minutes.  I had a great cheerleader, and a sweet little blonde girl jogging in place next to me pulling all sorts of stunts. :)

That's an easy one :) My only sister lives there and she has been wanting us to come visit. This is the first year where school/work/finances aren't as big of an issue. So we signed up.

Plus she really wants to show off her new, huge, custom home. I know I will be jealous but I'm not jealous of her payments!!!

Yeah, I know unbelieveable but I made it through.  I ran with a good friend of mine and we had a great time.  I'm pretty sure I could have picked up the pace quite a bit but I just wanted the distance.  Time was not the concern so I stayed back and ran with a buddy and that was definitely more entertaining, I probably wouldn't have finished if I didn't have the company.

My legs are bit tired and achy but not really bad at all.  So I hoping this is saying that I can pick up the pace and run the whole marathon in the time I did these today.  We had a lot of hills.  We ran almost the whole length of every avenue. City creek to 11 to B to 10 to M to 9 to B to M to 7 to B to 6 to virginia then to 5 down and back on 4, then three , two, one and back up to s. temple and then up Virginia all the way back to 11 avenue. YUCK!! And back around city creek.  Very lovely weather, wonderful views, company, I had a great day.

Yes still going to portland, won't make my goal but I still might be able to pull out a pr. School is getting better but last week was awful. 7a-6p mon, 7-7 on tuesday due to bodyworlds (I needed to go to make a worksheet for my students when they go on the fieldtrip) and 7-8:30 wed/thur due to parent teacher conference. I have decided I am going to quit marathoning for now and work on 5k's and a pr there. I can train and meet my goal with a couple miles a day, where I need a lot more time for marathons. I am an all or nothing type person, if I am not going to meet my goals I quit, I don't do it part way (as for my training) so I am setting smaller goals I can work on......so watch for me in the next week after portland.

Race: portland marathon (26.2 Miles) 05:42:00
Total Distance

Hello everyone, well I did it.  We have had a great time here in Portland.  My sisters new house is beautiful and we have had lots of fun.  My daughter almost immediately stopped asking me for stuff and went straight to her.  We went to the zoo and really enjoyed it.  It was huge and the animals were quite active.

Now the race, there were some bigger hills than I imagined, and they were long.  Not a very pretty course but it was fun because there were a lot of people. I start out too fast and started to slow down about mile ten.  There were some miles with the hills that were pretty slow.  My last 5 miles weren't too bad, I hurt like no other, but they went really well and I didn't slow down all that bad.  I was going to register in my weight division but we got to the expo late and they were practically shoving us out the door and I forgot.  You had to register for it at the expo only.

The finish line was just around and corner and that bothered me, but we were able to pick up about 10 more  people in the last .2.  I measured 26.55 on my garmin and I think that was because of all my weaving around people.  So if I hadn't have done that I would have only been about 3 minutes short of a pr.  But I was 6 minutes short of my all time pr and that was set 3yrs ago.  I was 10 minutes faster that st george marathon last year.  And this is my second fastest overall.  We had sprinkles most of the way and good little down pour for a couple of minutes. But I don't think it was as bad as the st georgers had.......he he

looking at results online I finished ahead of 33 percent, and 44 percent of the females.

My race pace to 10k was 5.0 and from 10K to half 4.7, half to 21 4.3, then 21 to finish 4.5

Enjoy your vacation!

Yeah Laurie!!! You rock. I'm so glad Chris was there to run with you. Isn't it crazy with all this rain on marathon day? The day after St. George was perfect weather. I felt like the sunshine was taunting me, like it was hiding on purpose during the race!

From laurie on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 11:51:21

They also had gummie bear stops, but when we got to the first one they were all out but we saw gummie bears on the ground for more than a mile afterwards, now that was taunting us too......

We even saw bums sleeping under a bridge too, some were still there when we came back around that way at the end of the race

1. I need to because exercise is one of the best things for SAD

2. 10-15 minutes a day is nothing!!

3. I will set out my clothes every night so I don't waste time looking.

4. I have holiday pounds already can't be adding more, and when I exercise I WANT to eat better.

5. Diet coke will stay for now, I use it as line of defense against my hundreds of teenagers :P and my 5am mornings......................although starbucks carmel spiced cider is to die for and i'm sure it's a bazillion calories but YUMMY!

Great goals Laurie! I agree with the Diet PEPSI. As long as I get in all of my water (about 16 cups) I feel just fine having a Diet Pepsi in liu of having a Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate from Starbucks ;) It also keeps me out of the cupboards too ;)

You are going to do GREAT!!! Hang in there! :)

Day one of my goal, and I feel fine, but my lungs don't like this dry air.  Knock one up to exercise induced asthma.

I like to run, I like to run and what a wake up in the mornings, this is going to be good, as long as I am good.

Total time 15 minutes :)

Okay, I am not running this morning but don't count me out just yet.  I have to take my daughter to tumbling at the nearby fitness center at 6pm.  I am going to hit the track or treadmill while she is in her class..............

but I am noticing more energy and the bloating is gone wahoo!!!!

I did 2.5 during tumbling class today in 29 minutes flat, yeah baby.  I haven't slowed too terribly bad but my endurance is definitely low and I can fill the jiggle in my backside.

I did another .2 for a cool down, heart rate seemed to stay between 165-175 pretty good I think.

I felt bad we missed you this morning, it is an awesome trail, not the traffic you get in SLC. Maurine and I are doing 13 miles next week, probably on the Jordon River Parkway in SLC, I will keep you posted if you want to run part of it or all of it with us.
